HEX vs RGB vs HSL: how to choose a color format

The short answer

Use HEX for design handoff and static palettes, RGB(A) when code needs to control opacity, and HSL when you generate color variants (lighter, darker, hover states). All three convert exactly — the choice is purely about what you intend to do with the color.

HEX

HEX packs the three RGB channels into six hex digits. It is the most compact and the easiest to copy and paste, which is why it dominates design files and CSS. The downside is that it is completely opaque to humans — without a tool you cannot tell that #D9480F is an orange. The 8-digit form (two extra digits) carries an alpha channel.

RGB / HSL

RGB maps directly to the three screen primaries, so it is the natural choice for image processing and Canvas work, and rgba() handles opacity cleanly. HSL is organised the way people think: H is hue (which color), S is vividness, L is lightness. To make a brighter hover state for a brand color, HSL only needs L moved from 45% to 55%, while RGB and HEX both require recomputing every channel.

FAQ

Can they convert losslessly

Yes. All three describe the same RGB color space, and the converter on this page converts live — the result looks identical.

Why does a designer hand me HEX and then ask for HSL

Because products constantly need hover states, disabled states and dark-mode variants. With HSL you only adjust the L component, which is far more controllable.

What are the last two digits in 8-digit HEX

The alpha channel. 00 is fully transparent, FF is fully opaque, so #D9480F80 is roughly 50% opacity.
